An emotional support animal letter from a licensed clinician. And an honest answer
A real evaluation with a licensed clinician, not a certificate or a registry entry. If an emotional support animal is clinically appropriate for you, you'll receive proper documentation, plus a straight answer about what it does and doesn't do under 2026 housing rules.

Your ESA letter still works where it matters most: housing
Housing is where an ESA letter has always carried real legal weight, and it still does. Many states protect emotional support animals under their own laws, your right to bring a housing claim is fully intact, and most landlords accommodate a well-documented request. What changed in May 2026 is who enforces it: HUD stepped back for untrained animals, and your state's law stepped forward. Most websites haven't caught up. Here's the current picture, honestly:
The Fair Housing Act is unchanged, many states protect ESAs under their own laws, and your right to bring a claim is intact. This is what your letter is for.
HUD narrowed its own enforcement to trained animals, and left every state law untouched. Knowing your state's rules is the new superpower — we build it into every letter.
Since 2021, ESAs fly under airline pet policies. We'll tell you that upfront instead of selling you a letter for the wrong job.
Clinical documentation from a licensed clinician, a physician or mental health professional, stating that you have a disability and a disability-related need for an emotional support animal. It's the evidence behind any accommodation request you make.
Many states protect assistance animals under their own fair-housing laws, independent of HUD. Your private right to bring a Fair Housing Act claim is intact, with a two-year window. Many landlords will still accommodate on request.
It's not a certificate, a registration, or an ID card; no official registry exists, which is why we don't sell those. And it's not a flight pass; ESAs fly under airline pet policies since 2021. Knowing this protects you from the sites that pretend otherwise.
We won't promise your landlord will accept it, because nobody can. We won't sell you a certificate, because it's worthless. And if an ESA isn't the right fit for your situation, our clinicians will help you figure out what is.
Three steps, entirely online
Most people finish step one in about five minutesComplete a brief assessment
Answer questions about your mental health history and how an animal supports you day to day. It takes about five minutes and goes straight to your clinician.
Meet a licensed clinician
A private consultation with a clinician licensed in your state, typically by phone. A genuine clinical evaluation: they're determining whether an ESA is appropriate for you, not processing an order.
Receive your documentation
If clinically appropriate, your letter is emailed the same day the review completes: professional letterhead, license number, signature and date, plus guidance for your state. 30-day states like California follow the statutory period first.
Your clinician makes an independent professional judgment. That independence is exactly what makes your letter credible when you use it, and it's why we never sell “guaranteed approvals.”
What your documentation includes
If your clinician determines an ESA is appropriate, your letter arrives the same day their review completes, and it contains everything a housing provider can reasonably ask to see:
Not included, on purpose: certificates, ID cards, registry numbers. None of those exist officially.
Why work with us
Licensed clinicians, real evaluations
Every letter comes from a licensed clinician in your state, physician or mental health professional, after an actual consultation. Evaluations led by our psychiatry team. No automated approvals.
Current, honest legal guidance
We rewrote this entire site after HUD's May 2026 change. You'll get an accurate picture of your position, including where it's weaker than it used to be.
Secure and confidential
HIPAA-compliant platform, encrypted records, private document delivery.
Support that knows the current rules
If your landlord pushes back, our team can point you to your state's actual protections and the right agency, rather than repeating rules that expired.
Your state matters more than it used to
With federal enforcement narrowed, the protection you actually have depends heavily on where you live. Some states protect assistance animals under their own fair-housing laws regardless of training. Others rely entirely on the federal framework. Some set their own requirements before a letter is considered valid.

Common questions
Straight answers, current as of August 24, 2026.
Is an ESA letter the same as registering my animal?
No. There is no official government registry for emotional support animals, and no legitimate certificate or ID card. Any site selling registration or certification is selling a document with no legal standing. The only document that carries weight is a letter from a licensed clinician who has actually evaluated you.
Does an ESA letter guarantee my landlord has to accept my animal?
No, and it never did. It supports a reasonable accommodation request. Since HUD's May 2026 change, federal enforcement no longer presumptively backs untrained emotional support animals, though your state law may, and your private right to bring a Fair Housing Act claim remains.
Can I fly with my emotional support animal?
Not as an ESA. Since January 11, 2021, the Air Carrier Access Act no longer treats emotional support animals as service animals, and airlines are not required to accommodate them. Most now treat them as pets, with standard pet fees and carrier rules.
Who can write a legitimate ESA letter?
A clinician licensed in your state: a psychiatrist or other licensed physician, psychologist, licensed therapist or counselor, licensed clinical social worker, or psychiatric nurse practitioner. The letter should be on professional letterhead and include their license number, signature and date.
How long does it take?
Once your clinician completes their review and determines an ESA is appropriate, your letter is emailed to you the same day. The exception is states with mandatory relationship periods: California, Arkansas, Iowa and Louisiana require an established 30-day client relationship before a letter can issue, and we follow those rules. A “same-day letter” in those states is a red flag, not a feature.
How much does an ESA letter cost?
$129, flat, and that covers up to two animals on the same letter. It includes the consultation, the clinician's independent review, and, if approved, your letter the same day the review completes, plus state-specific guidance. For comparison, Pettable lists its ESA letter at $169 as of August 2026. No per-pet upcharges, no add-ons, no registry fees.
What if the clinician decides an ESA isn't right for me?
Occasionally that's the outcome, and you'll get the reasoning along with real alternatives. If you're unsure whether an ESA fits your situation, don't rule yourself out ahead of time; the evaluation is exactly how you find out.
