Check your state's rules first
Three things vary by state: waiting periods, licensure expectations, and what your letter will actually achieve locally since May 2026. Two minutes on your state's page sets your timeline and expectations.
Choose a licensed evaluator, not a letter store
Your existing therapist, or a telehealth evaluation with a clinician licensed in your state. Ten-second screen: is a live evaluation with a named, state-licensed clinician part of the process? Is “approval guaranteed” anywhere on the page? (It shouldn't be.) Is the product about you or about registering your animal?
Complete a genuine evaluation
A brief intake, then a private consultation with a clinician licensed in your state, with real clinical questions: your symptoms and their impact, treatment history, and specifically how the animal helps. Answer honestly, including about the hard days.
The determination
If the clinician concludes you have a disability and a disability-related need for the animal, they issue the letter. Their independence is what gives it force.
Receive and deploy the letter
Same-day email delivery once the review completes (after any state-mandated relationship period). Then use it properly: a formal written accommodation request, not a text with an attachment.

How fast can I get an ESA letter?
In most states: as fast as the evaluation can be scheduled, with the letter emailed the same day the clinician completes their review. In California, Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana and Montana, a 30-day client relationship must exist first, by statute, with no legitimate way around it.
Can I get an ESA letter without seeing anyone?
Not legitimately. A live evaluation (telehealth counts) is what separates a clinical document from a purchased PDF, and it's what state rules like Florida's “personal knowledge” standard and California's AB 468 are testing for.
How much does an ESA letter cost?

Be wary at both extremes elsewhere: suspiciously cheap usually means no real evaluation, and expensive bundles usually mean registry extras with no legal value.
Can my regular therapist write it instead?
Often yes, and it's a fine route; ask them directly. Some therapists have policies against ESA letters; telehealth evaluation services exist largely for people whose therapist declines or who don't have one.
What if I'm denied?
It's not the common outcome, and if it happens you'll get the reasoning plus real alternatives, from treatment options to whether a psychiatric service dog fits a task-shaped need. Don't rule yourself out before a clinician has heard your situation; the evaluation exists to answer exactly that question.
